New York New York, I Love You

New York City is by far one of the greatest cities in the world. No amount of time spent in this city would ever be enough. It truely is a concrete jungle full of big dreams just waiting to be fulfilled.

Here I have put a list together that just touches on some of the amazing places you must visit when in New York, New York.

Central Park

Central Park is located right in the middle of Manhattan City and covers 843 acres of land. This is a lot of land to cover, so some of the focus points to visit within the park are; The Boat House for morning tea, the ice skating rink, Central Park Zoo, walking tours and bike tours.

The Boat House - Central Park

The Rockefeller Centre

The Rockefeller is another great attraction in New York, as there is plenty to do when visiting. It is located in the centre of Midtown Manhattan and covers 22 acres of the City. Some of the features of the Rockefeller are; Radio City Music Hall, GE Building (roof garden), centre art and an ice skating rink in the winter months, the underground concourse and the NBC studios where some of everyone's favourite shows are filmed such as Saturday Night Live and of course 30 Rock which gets its name from the Rockefeller Centre itself.

In my opinion the best feature of the Rockefeller is "Top of the Rock", which takes you all the way up to the top of the building and looks out all over the city. Some boast that Top of the Rock's view is much better than the view from the Empire State Building.
Top of the Rock - view of Central Park

Fifth Avenue
On Fifth Avenue you can shop until you drop! You almost shouldn't bother packing any clothes when visiting New York as you will buy so much and will have no room in your suitcase for any old stuff. There are shops for those on a budget, such as H&M, Zara and Forever 21. There are all the favourites such as Victoria's Secret, Tiffany and Co and American Eagle Outfitters. And then of course there are the big department stores you see in all the movies for the big spenders! such as Bergdorf and Goodman and Henri Bendel.

MoMA (Museum of Modern Art)

MoMA offers an overview of modern and contemporary art; including architecture and design, drawings, paintings, photography, sculptures, illustrated books and artists books, films, prints and electronic media. The Museum is located in Midtown Manhattan on 53rd Street and is the home to some well known art pieces from artists such as Andy Warhol, Monet, Picasso and van Gough.

High Line
The High Line is a New York City linear park built on a section of the former elevated New York Central Railroad. The walk itself along the railroad offers beautiful views, as the railroad has been turned into a beautiful green garden but it also offers a great lookout of the West side of the city and Chelsea, walking past iconic streets and buildings. The walk itself is 1.6 km and can be done in sections  and is also a great place to go up and sit for an afternoon and just take in the city.

Magnolia Bakery
New York is home to many great foods, restaurants and bakery's but one bakery you must visit when in New York is the Magnolia Bakery. Magnolia's offer the most amazing tasting cakes you may ever taste in your life. They have so many different flavours to choose from, it's hard to pick just one, but who can go past a red velvet cupcake. There are three bakeries located in the city, one on Bleecker Street, one on 6th Avenue and one on Columbus Avenue, why not visit all three?

Yankee Stadium
If it's baseball season than going to a Yankees game is a must! Even if your not a sports fanatic or don't even know how the game is played, it is a guaranteed good night out. The New Yorkers love their baseball and their team and go all out to support them and this creates such an amazing atmosphere you just want to be apart of.

Above is just a very small taste of the great city that is known as New York, the list of things to do when visiting is endless - catch a show on Broadway, have a sandwich at Katz, visit the Plaza, check out Grand Central Station, visit landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero, catch the Jitney up to the Hampton's for a night or two, walk the Brooklyn Bridge, visit Tom's Diner famously used in the television show Seinfeld, eat a Nathan's hot dog, catch the Subway to Coney Island, spend a morning browsing the art at the MET, sip on a hot chocolate at Serendipity, spend a day shopping in Macy's. The list goes on and on. New York truly is a city you will fall in love with and never want to leave.

Eat Clean, Train Mean, Look Lean

So many people go to the gym, sweat their butts off and go wreck the whole thing by eating junk food and wonder why they are not making any progress. If you are training to lose weight and tone up then you have to remember to achieve this goal it is 20% exercise and 80% diet that will get you there. Food is purely to fuel the body, not to indulge in.

I have picked five foods that can help speed up the metabolism, burn fat and help build lean muscle.

Green Tea

Green tea has not only been proven to be a good protection against heart disease but has also been proven to aid in burning body fat.

A study has shown that drinking four cups of green tea was reported to reduce the body weight of healthy people by almost 1kg and body fat by 2.4% in only a period of 14 days. Research has also shown that this is due to the green tea activating the body's thermogenic fat burning activity.

Tea party anyone?

Grapefruit

Grapefruit has been proven to lower the insulin levels in your body by a small degree which prevents the body from storing as much sugar as fat. Lower insulin also curbs the appetite as high insulin levels turn the brain onto thinking that it's time to bring some energy into the stomach.

Turkey Meat
Turkey meat is a lean meat, with a high protein content. Each 100 gram serving of turkey meat contains only 160 calories and because it is so high in protein it helps to make you feel full and satisfied for longer, which helps in preventing overeating.

Turkey is also a good source of niacin, vitamin B6 and selenium and these nutrients help in energy production and metabolism of the thyroid hormone. It is also, like the grapefruit good for keeping insulin levels balanced and therefore keeping sugar levels down.

Coffee

Coffee increases the free flowing fatty acids from your fat stores, allowing you to access fat instead of carbs or lean muscle for energy. It can isolate the stubborn body fat you struggle to get rid of and burn that for energy.

So next time you hit the gym, half an hour before drink a coffee. it will help give you energy and burn that stubborn fat you've been working so hard to get rid of.

Yoghurt

Studies have shown that fat around your waist produce a hormone called cortisol which tells your body to accumulate even more belly fat. When you eat yoghurt the calcium in it signals your fat cells to pump out less of the cortisol, helping in reducing fat on the waist line. While the amino acids in the yoghurt help to burn fat that already exists.

Yoghurt is also a great source of vitamins such as potassium, phosphorous, riboflavin, iodine, zinc and vitamin B5 and B12.

There you have it, five foods to add to your diet to burn that fat off your body. Keep checking back to House of F's for more healthy fat burning foods.

It's Crunch Time

Gaining a flat toned stomach is the main focus for most people that work out but can also be the hardest part of the workout. Core is generally the weakest part of the body and the fat on your stomach is the most stubborn to get rid of. But it's crunch time and I have an ab workout that will turn your stomach from flab to fab. The main rule to remember when trying to tone those abs is variety, make sure you work each muscle in your core - the transverse abdominal, the internal obliques, the external obliques and the rectus abdominis.

- 15 x cycle crunches
Start in a sit up position, put your hands behind your head, lift your legs and bring your left knee into your right elbow and then your right knee to your left elbow and repeat 15 x's.

- 15 x reach for the sky sit ups
Start by lying flat on your back with your arms extended straight behind your head, sit up with your arms straight reaching for the sky keeping your legs straight. Repeat 15 x's.

- 15 x scissors
Lie flat on your back with your arms beside your body and raise your legs slightly off the ground and criss cross your feet 15 x's.

- 15 x double leg lift
Lie flat on your back with your legs vertically in the air and your hands palms down under your bum. Lift your legs straight up vertically, hold for a second or two and lower. Repeat 15 x's.

- 15 x Row Crunches
Sit balancing on your bum with your legs bent and your feet slightly lifted off the ground, keep your arms straight beside your side, lean back at the same time as straightening your legs and then sit up while bending your legs in towards your chest. Repeat 15 x's.

- 15 x Oblique leg lift
Lie on your side with your back straight and your arm supporting your torso up, slowly crunch your legs towards your torso and back down (do not put your feet all the way back on the ground). Repeat 15 x's and then again on the other side.

- 15 x Leg Lowers
Lie on your back with your legs raised and bent, place your hands behind your head and sit up in a crunch position. Hold the crunch position and slowly lower your legs and raise them up again. Repeat 15 x's.

-15 x Oblique twist
Sit balancing on your bum with your legs bent and your feet slightly off the ground and twist your whole body from side to side. Repeat 15x's.

Repeat this whole routine 3 times or more and you will have rock hard abs in no time!!
Each session should only take 10 minutes or less.

Fake It

It's coming to that time of year where the leaves begin to change colour and fall from the trees, the days get shorter and a chill hits the air. Thats right autumn/winter is on its way and its time to go digging in the wardrobe for those 2 fashion favourites - the faux fur vest and the leather look pant.

The one and only best way to wear a fur vest and leather look pant is to fake it because no animal should have to die or be treated wrongly to dress a human or anyone.

Intensify Your Workout

Looking to melt away those last few kilos to reveal those muscles hiding under that last layer of fat. Then step up your workout with some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). HIIT is an exercise strategy that alternates between short intervals of intense training and less intense recovery time training or complete rest.

HIIT is a way to burn more calories in a period of time than you would if you did your workout at a steady moderate pace. HIIT if done correctly can put your body into fat burning overdrive.

You can practice this style of training in a number of ways, which include: treadmill, stationary bike, cross trainer, jumping rope or incorporate it into a circuit.

An example of HIIT using the treadmill is; start out for a minute running as hard as you can, getting your heart rate up and then drop back for 2 minutes to a slow jog or walk, lowering your heart rate. Repeat these 3 minute intervals for 20 - 30 minutes and you will be burning more fat than if you just ran at the same steady speed for the entire 20 - 30 minutes.

If you enjoy a more circuit style of workout, you can apply the HIIT concept to that too. An example of doing this is; start out with 30 seconds of mountain climbers, take a 10 second rest and continue with 30 seconds of high knees, take a 10 second rest and repeat for an interval of 4 minutes. Then move onto 2 more exercises such as squats and burpees and continue on until you have a 40 minute to an hour workout.

Next time your getting ready to do a workout, incorporate some HIIT to it and watch the fat melt away.
